Beach

This is paradise. The beach stretches on for what seems like forever before finally in the distance curving into a smooth crescent. The evening air is warm, moist and refreshing. The smells of the ocean and beach surround and engulf me.

The grains of sand are cool and smooth against my feet. The beach is a desert against the canopy of great palm trees. Their bark is like scales, and each leaf is a thousand knives. Glistening in the setting sun. My hammock, although not a natural occurrence, is a necessity. It provides a relaxing and comfortable way to feel at one with my surroundings.

The ocean waves lick the sandy beach foaming as they glide toward me before sliding back down into the graceful sea. The sea is an ocean of ripple glass reflecting, reflecting magnificent yellow and orange. The smooth waves miles away roll like a flag in the wind. Just down the beach the waves thrash against rocks like an angry beast trying to get out of its cage onto land.

The smell of the beach engulfs me in this almost unreal world of relaxation. The air is smooth, not wet and not dry. You could almost touch it, you could feel it all around. It reminds me of a dog kissing its master. My shorts, the only thing I am wearing, are smooth like the layer of silk that seems to sit over the sea and waving slightly in the ocean breeze. Here I can feel the energy living or not, coming from he sea and from the many birds that sit still, not stirring as if in a trance by this beauty, out of sight. I could feel the energy of the people laughing and dancing at the hotel bar. Along with this comes the strong smell of liquor and wine.. The drink I have sitting next to me produces a dry taste that slightly dulls the scene.

As I like here, the sound of waves pound the beach like maracas whose slow thunder glides up and down the shore. I hear the distant sounds of a party: people are yelling at the tops of their lungs as if their lives depended on it. I'm not complaining because along with this and all the other sounds comes the sound and feel of paradise.

How to Control Anger

This would give you guides on how to control your emotions towards your peers, friends, officemates and people around you, especially your boss.

1. Anyone who got mad first has the right to be mad. If someone got mad first than you, then you should let him to express his emotions. For the mean time, just be cool and silent. And please do not argue with him.

2. No one will get mad or fight with himself alone. So if you never contest or argue or even talk to someone that is mad to you, then sooner or later he will stop talking.

3. If someone is mad, he is considered deaf. If someone is angry, he will never listen to anyone, so don't try to explain and fight back, he will never consider or understand you because he will only hear nothing except to himself.

4. An angry man is considered an autistic. According to a priest, this is quite biblical because the Lord said when He was crucified, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". The modern term for these kinds of people is autistic, so you better not get angry so no one will call you autistic.

You should also know and realize that the persons who make your day bad are jewels, because you need them for you to be mature. If these people still annoys you, then it only means that you are still immature. God will not take away those people. It's for you to take away your bad feelings towards them. You'll know that you are mature enough if the time comes that you never felt any anger or annoying feeling to these people. It is the time in which you learned to accept them with patience.

5. Finally, the best part of this is to tell and motivate yourself with the quote: “because of this person, I will grow mature and because of his/her contribution in my life and my maturity, God will take him sooner or later”.

Use Your Brain

Do you really belief that almost all humans use only 10% of their brain capacity?

Human brain is one of the most complex instruments. From the metabolism point of view, brain is the most expensive organ to operate, because require a lot of energy. Human brain only take 2 % from the total body weight, but brain uses 20 % of blood supply, 20 % energy, and 20 % of human heat. One of the myth about human brain is that human only uses 10 % of brain capacity, and if human is able to use the other 90 % of the capacity, it is believed that human could win a Nobel price, Olympic gold medal, or even releasing human psychic force.

This myth has been around for more than a century, and has been continuously brought up by many people from many backgrounds. More than a decade ago, some motivational speaker without any hesitation claimed that if we attended their expensive courses, we will be able to work all of our brain capacity. One of the early popular references about the myth is Dale Carnegie's book in 1936, How to Win Friends and Influence People. He claimed that if we able to use our brain harder, we will able to fix our live. Without any neurology evidences, he claimed that most of people only uses 15 % of their brain. The book itself was selling well, and had helped in promoting the myth.

Dale Carnegie may had based his information in the wrong interpretation about Karl Lashley experiment in 1920's. At that time Lashley was trying to locate a specific item called as memory in the brain. He trained mouse to run through labyrinth and then measured how far they could do it while he took their brain skins incessantly. Lashley found that memory is not located in one place, but located in all brain skins, and maybe also in some other place. The fact is that the result of the experiment showed any skin parts removal caused memory problem.

Lashley experiment's had significant result and has been radically wrong interpreted. Lashley experiment's showed that mouse still able to memorize good enough until only 10 % of the brain left. There are two issues developed here. The first is that Lashley didn't mention that we only need 10 % of our brain. The second is that he didn't discarded 90 % of the brain from any mouse.

Different version of this myth is revived every decade. One version was originated from Albert Enstein-known as “mega-brain”-that stated “we only use 10 % of our brain”, or an anonymous scientist (the name itself never been mentioned) presumed to found that we only use 10 % of our brain. Another version is that 10 % from the brain capacity is the conscious part and the 90 % is the subconscious part (The reality is, there is no such departmentation).

The myth that we only use 10 % of the brain was eventually proven to be untrue with the use of scanning technology such as Tomografi Emition Positron and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging that can show the brain metabolism. In every human activity such as walking, talking, laughing, eating, and hearing, human only use small part of the brain. However, after 24 hour all brain parts are apparent in the scanning device. The fact is that if you use all of the brain in one time, you will have an epilepsy attack.

Does Brain Shrinkage Really Matter?

Do you belief that adult brain cells, or neurons, are largely static ? Does it really matter?

According to a new study of 446 people in Australia, scientist found that brain shringkage will not reduce brain function."We found that, on average, men aged 64 years have smaller brains than men aged 60," said Helen Christensen of the Australian National University. "However, despite this shrinkage, cognitive functions like memory, attention and speed of processing are unaffected."

Scientist also found that educational level have no relation with brain shrinkage. Previous studies had indicated that higher levels of education or continuing intellectual activity could serve as a sort of Pilates for the brain, keeping an aging mind fit. Older minds do sometimes fail, of course, owing to conditions such as Alzheimer's that scientists are only beginning to understand.

Altough adult's brain growing much slower than during the early years of following birth, neuron's network keep changing structurally. "The scale of change is much smaller than what goes on during the critical period of development, but the fact that it goes on at all is earth-shattering,"said study co-author Elly Nedivi, a neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

During the early years following birth, humans manufacture an estimated 250,000 neurons per minute and then spend the next few years wiring them together. Traditionally, it was assumed that this neural plasticity settles down by adulthood.

Neurons communicate with one another by exchanging either electrical or chemical signals across tiny gaps where two neurons meet, called synapses. The signals can be either excitatory or inhibitory, meaning they either increase or decrease, respectively, the activity of the neuron they're affecting.

The researchers estimate that on average, about 14 percent of the interneurons they observed showed structural modifications.

Approximately 20 to 30 percent of the neurons in the neocortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher functions such as thought, are made up of inhibitory interneurons. These neurons are believed to play an important role in regulating brain activity by delaying or blocking signals from excitatory neurons.

The researchers speculated whether interneurons might be largely responsible for neural plasticity in adult brains.

Coffee with Kofi, Mr. President?

A few years ago there were a lot of what became known as 'Bushisms' floating around the internet and appearing in various email boxes and on websites. I must confess that some of these were often made up and so ridiculous that they ceased to be amusing. At least to me they did.

The following tale is one that I came across while doing some research on another project. It made me laugh so much that I had to relate it here.

Is it true? Well, probably not, but who knows?

Imagine the scenario: The President is in conference with one of his high ranking advisers.

Mr President: Tell me, who is the President of China?

Adviser: Hu is.

Mr President: That's what I asked you. Who is?

Adviser: Hu is, Mr President.

Aside:(Hu Jintao is the president of China, but YOU knew that didn't you?)

Mr President: (Becoming exasperated) Tell me, who is the president of China?

The conversation goes round and round until the Adviser gets sick of it.

Adviser: Let's call Kofi (Meaning Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General that was)

Mr President: Great idea, yes, let's have coffee.

The Real Definition of Love

What is the real definition of love? Love has many different meanings to all different types of people. There are many stages of love at different ages and different types of love. My definition of love is caring about someone so deeply that your like would be very different with out them there would always be a little piece of yourself missing if they pass away or leave you. Your life is incomplete when they are away and you would do anything to protect them or to make them happy. When I think of love I think of a couple sitting by the ocean holding hands and kissing. The feeling of love is “that can't eat cant sleep reach for the stars world series kinda stuff”. But this definition and the way that I portray and believe in love differs from yours, the classrooms, and probably many other people. “Love is an incredibly powerful word. When you're in love, you always want to be together, and when you're not, you're thinking about being together because you need that person and without them your life is incomplete” (Sophocles).

My definition of love is what I personally think of it. The definition that I gave is what I think of when thinking of a couple (being in a relationship with another person.) This is my interpretation of love as an 18-year-old female. But when I was a little kid I thought of love in a completely different way, and when I am older and wiser I will probably think of love differently also. As an a teenager I realize that I have not experienced the real meaning of life yet and that I have not seen all there is to see in the world so how could I understand the “real” definition of love? How can anyone really know the real definition of love? I believe that love is one of the hardest words in the dictionary to actually understand and know the true definition.

There are so many different types of love. There is little kid love, teenage love, friendship love, family love, marriage love and parent to children love. All of these different types of love have similar meanings but have a little something different to be unique. Clearly when you're a little kid you don't really know what love is. Yes, you love your parents and your family and your friends but children don't get the concept of actually loving someone. Teenagers and their concept of being “in love” most people think they are crazy because teenagers have no idea what love is. That is usually what is said when people hear of teenagers being in love. Teenagers believe they are in love after possibly being with someone for just a few weeks or months can you actually be in love with someone after just that short period of time? And if you are in love with that person then why do you not spend forever with them? Another interpretation of love for me is having that person in your life forever, and teenagers fall in and out of love all of the time so is it actually love? Who can really tell?

Friendship love is different for everyone; everyone loves their friends and would probably be lost without them. I believe friends are the purity in life and without them every one would be a little crazy. Friendship love is knowing that you will always have someone to call, cry to or just to be there for you when you need him or her most. I think that friendship love is one of the best kinds of love because you may fight and be mad but true friendship will last even if you argue and don't talk for a while you can go back like nothing ever happened.

Family love, everyone has family members and everyone loves there family. But this kind of love is very different then a relationship kind of love because your dealing with a different type of feeling, but it is still love. When people are around their families they are there real selves. No questions asked no one is judging them they can be free to be themselves. “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind” (Dr.Seuss). Families will always love you for you. No matter what happens, how bad you screw up and the mistakes that you make your family will always be there to have your back. That is true love and an unbreakable bond that no one can really explain or come between.

Marriage love, how do people know that this is where they belong for the rest of their lives, that the love they have for this person will last forever and that they can trust this person to be good to them and make them happy forever, at my age I see it very hard to know this. But that's where love comes in, when you love someone enough to make them apart of your life forever. "The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”(Nickolas Sparks, The Notebook) That said by Nickolas Sparks is what I believe is a deep everlasting feeling of love.

Love to me is always caring about the person not wanting to be without them and not being mad or staying mad at the person. When does this ever happen though? Hardly ever. When people are in love they argue, they fight, they have disagreements and it is usually never as perfect as most people picture love to be. At first they might have a difficult time trusting the person that they love and through out there loving relationship they may have disagreements but it is worth it. Love is worth the trouble and the baggage that comes along with it because love gives meaning to life and without love life would be so boring.
